Terraria How to Summon Moon Lord Again

The Moon Lord is a summonable boss in the Hardmode world state in Terraria, and is generally considered the "final" boss due to the steps required to fight him, the difficulty of the battle, and the fact that the game credits play at the end of the fight. This wiki page gives an overview of the boss, how he can be summoned, his moveset, and some tips on how to beat him based on your preferred fighting style.

How To Summon Moon Lord

There are two avenues for summoning the Moon Lord; however, using the Celestial Sigil to engage the battle is only an option after he has been beaten using the Celestial Pillar route. Regardless of which route you take, it's important to note that he will spawn directly on top of you and will pursue you endlessly, so attempting to flee is not an option.

  • Destroy the four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Nebula, Vortex, and Stardust) during the Lunar Event. Once these have been destroyed, the fight with the Moon Lord will automatically begin. As you will not have time to restock any consumables prior to his arrival, we recommend being fully prepared for a prolonged battle before destroying the final Celestial Pillar.
  • Use the craftable Celestial Sigil in any biome, at any time of day. Combine 20 Solar Fragments, 20 Nebula Fragments, 20 Vortex Fragments, and 20 Stardust Fragments at an Ancient Manipulator to create the Sigil, then activate it to summon the Moon Lord. Note that the Golem must have been defeated before this recipe becomes available to you.

Moon Lord Attacks

Moon Lord utilizes four total attacks and one summoned creature, as well as one passive source of damage if you accidentally come in contact with the eyes on his hands. He also has a unique debuff via a tentacle that homes in on you from his mouth. If it connects with you, you will experience the Moon Bite Debuff, which prevents the use of healing items for the duration of connection. The mouth tentacle also spawns Moon Leech Clots that travel from you to his mouth, which slowly refill Moon Lord's health if not killed before reaching him.

  • Phantasmal Death Ray: Every 30 seconds or so, the vertical eye on Moon Lord's head opens and shoots a massive laser that sweeps across the screen. Moon Lord telegraphs this attack by his head eye blinking and firing two Phantasmal Bolts before engaging the laser. Note that this is his attack with the highest damage output.
  • Phantasmal Eye: Multiple small bluish eyes shoot from Moon Lord's hand eyes across the screen before shooting towards you and exploding upon impact. While these have fairly accurate homing capabilities, they do explode if they come in contact with a block, so you may be able to shield yourself from their damage.
  • Phantasmal Bolt: Two multicolored bolts fire from either of Moon Lord's hands (or, more rarely, his head eye) and shoot towards you. While these can pass through blocks, they have relatively loose homing, so simply serpentining out of their way should be a fine strategy to avoid them.
  • Phantasmal Sphere: The eyes on Moon Lord's hands spawn six phantasmal spheres, three per hand. These hang in the air momentarily before exploding and potentially inflicting massive damage. If you attempt to run too far from them, they have a loose homing mechanism and will travel towards you prior to exploding.
  • True Eye of Cthulhu: Every time you defeat Moon Lord's left hand, right hand, or head, a True Eye of Cthulhu is summoned. These creature summons are immune to damage, and will follow the player around the arena performing all the same attacks as Moon Lord, albeit with lower damage output.

Tips and Strategies for Beating Moon Lord

Because of the chaotic nature of this fight, the strategy is the same regardless of whether you're running a melee, ranged, magic, or summons build: 1) make sure you have a way to get off the ground and 2) kite like hell.

  • As Moon Lord will spawn directly on top of you, be sure you're in a space that will be conducive to a fair fight. Since the majority of his attacks can go through bricks, trying to create barriers may only hinder your ability to strafe around him. While it is beneficial to be able to get high up (especially for melee builds, as you'll need the height to hit his head), we strongly recommend going in with a flying mount or flight-bequeathing Vanity Item, since trying to build platforms to jump on may limit your movement later on.
  • Moon Lord has three separate health bars: one for each hand, and then one for his head. However, once these three spots have been destroyed, his chest will open up and a fourth health bar will appear for his heart. Regarding his hands and head, you can defeat them in any order; however, we recommend trying to destroy the head first, as that removes the potential for his Phantasmal Death Ray attack.
    • When the eyes on his hands or head are closed, they are immune from damage. During this time, it may be best to briefly focus your attacks on chipping away the health of a different appendage.
    • Moon Lord's default position places him so that his heart is below ground, and therefore inaccessible. For this reason, it is vital to have an item, summons, or Potion that grants prolonged flight. Getting above him will cause him to rise out of the ground, allowing you to damage his heart.

  • Watch out for his mouth tentacle! As the battle progresses, you will see a greyish line slither out of his mouth towards you; run as far as you can to keep it from attaching or, barring that, get it to detach. Letting his tentacle stay attached to you will not only hinder your ability to heal, but will also gradually restore his HP.
    • On the topic of healing, trying to teleport away from him to heal with items or the Nurse NPC isn't advisable, as Moon Lord will teleport to you immediately, giving you no breathing room and potentially killing the Nurse.
  • Moon Lord is weak to all debuffs (excluding Confusion), so plan accordingly with Potions and Weapons that inflict both physical and elemental damage. However, it is vital to note that all debuffs are nullified every time he blinks the eye on the afflicted appendage (e.g. if you poisoned his hand and the eye on that hand blinks, you will need to poison it again).

Moon Lord's Drops

The table below outlines both the possible and guaranteed drops you will receive once you beat Moon Lord. Note that, in the table below, only one red item will drop after you defeat him; however, you will receive both blue items and anywhere from 8-18 items from the orange category, albeit with the majority being Super or Greater Healing Potions.
